The irony couldn’t have been richer as Hungary and Romania celebrated the opening of their border with a dog crossing the Hungarian-Romanian border. Romania and Bulgaria have entered the EU’s Schengen Area as of this year, with their citizens now enjoying freedom of movement in the EU. Hungary and Romania have the most severe stray dog problem in the European Union.
ย The Help Hungarian Dogs group estimates that there are up to 500,000 stray dogs in Hungary with up to 2,000 dogs dying every month due to irresponsibility. Currently, there are up to 27,000 dogs in shelters in Hungary run by more than 300 organisations. Hungary is also the poorest country in the EU.
On the other hand, the problem of stray dogs in Romania is estimated to be even bigger with up to 600,000 dogs estimated to be living in the streets.
