Former Minister Michael Falzon dies aged 79

Michael Falzon, one of Malta’s best-known politicians and a former Minister within the Nationalist Party, has died aged 79.

A trained architect and influential public servant, he was first elected to Parliament in 1976.  Falzon served as Minister for Infrastructure, Environment, and Education in the 1987, 1992, and 1994 Cabinets, under then Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami.

He had joined the political scene during the 1970s and was an important contributor to both the youth and executive committees of the Nationalist Party. Later, with his oratory, editorial, and developmentist skills, he gained recognition through his writings and contributions toward public policy.

Falzon was also one of the founders of the Malta Developers Association. His influence was well felt outside the confines of politics in infrastructure, media, and the national debate.

Tributes have been coming in from across the political spectrum: PN Leader Bernard Grech described Falzon as a “pillar of public service,” highlighting his lasting contributions to the nation, while Prime Minister Robert Abela recognised their past collaborations and commitment to improving Malta.

Outside of politics, Falzon also chaired the Water Services Corporation and was a regular contributor to Malta’s national media. His career came to an end in 2015 upon his retirement amidst scrutiny over a Swiss bank account, which he had claimed was related to consultancy work prior to his political tenure.

Survived by his wife, Mary Anne, and son David, Falzon leaves behind a legacy of service, professionalism, and dedication to Malta’s development.
