European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has welcomed the Gaza ceasefire, calling it “the breakthrough we all hoped for.” She underlined in a statement that diplomatic and humanitarian resolution of conflicts must go side by side.

The ceasefire brings an end to weeks of escalating violence, which has seen many lives lost and many people displaced. Metsola said that the European Union remains committed to dialogue and supporting reconstruction in Gaza. This deal represents a major step toward regional stability.

“The priority now is to make sure the agreement holds,” she added, noticing that stability has to be achieved along with aid delivery and the release of all remaining hostages. Metsola stated that Europe has a role to play in shaping a “day after” with hope for this region.

Speaking on the same day as Donald Trump’s inauguration for a second term as US President, Metsola extended her best wishes to the American people. She underlined that EU-US relations are the “cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity for decades.” While challenges lie ahead, she said there is a need for a renewed transatlantic alliance on shared values.ย  “Europe stands ready to work with a strengthened partnership for stability, opportunity, and hope of a better future around the world,” she affirmed.

On the third anniversary of the death of former President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, Metsola praised her predecessor as a “European leader, a champion of democracy, and a dear friend.” Metsola spoke with regard for his vision of Europe united and at one: “David believed deeply in a Europe which could be united in solidarity and which would leave no one behind.

The session celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rocco Chinnici, one of the anti-Mafia magistrates, and Paolo Borsellino’s 85th, whose legacy reverberates across Europe. Metsola referred to it as a “source of inspiration in Italy and in the whole of Europe,” therefore emphasising the importance of their fight against organised crime.
