Suspect in €180,000 mobile theft ring arrested and extradited to Malta

Intensive investigations into a series of thefts from mobile phone stores have led to the identification of one of the alleged thieves, believed to be part of an organized crime group.

The thefts, which took place during the summer of 2023, involved the culprits forcing open shop doors, swiftly emptying shelves of mobile phones, and fleeing the scene within seconds. The total value of the stolen electronic devices amounts to €180,000.

Persistent investigations revealed that those involved are likely of Romanian nationality. A European Arrest Warrant was promptly issued, resulting in the arrest of one suspect in Romania in recent days. The 27-year-old man was extradited to Malta in the last few hours.

This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, though police are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining members of the group.

The suspect is expected to be brought before Magistrate Jean Paul Grech at around 11:00 am today.
