In an interview with TRT Editor, Yusuf Erim, the EU’s High Representative Kaja Kallas was evasive when asked about the Kurdish issue in Syria. The Kurdish armed forces, the SDF are locked in a disagreement with the Syrian government over their future autonomy.
Yusuf Erim, who works as an editor at the Turkish public broadcaster said that Turkey is considering a military intervention against the SDF. The EU’s High Representatives said that she acknowledges Turkey’s concerns and described Turkey as the EU’s main partner in combating ISIS. The claim that Turkey fought against ISIS is contested by many including the Kurds who had to fight ISIS while ISIS freely crossed the border from Turkey.
The EU had previously refused to lift sanctions on Syria citing the rights of minorities as one of its concerns. The Kurds are Syria’s largest minority.
The EU has now began lifting sanctions on Syria but is leaving the option open to roll back the process.
Yesterday, Syrian military factions agreed to appoint Ahmed al-Sharaa as President of the Transitional Government.
