In the latest example of Russian-style deception by members of the party representing the Maltese working class, we are now being told that housing affordability has always been a problem, even thirty years ago.
The Labour Party candidate Clint Flores (he failed to get elected in the European Parliament election, and may very well contest the general election), said that a Maltese individual couldn’t afford a property on a basic salary by himself. He showed us his salary to prove this, which automatically defeated his point.
LM190 a month was a good salary for Malta in 1999 and this doesn’t include the over-time and his allowances. He was challenged by his audience because we, Maltese, know very well that this is a stupid lie, but he admitted that he doesn’t have the numbers, despite bragging he is an economist. Sure, I can show him the figures below. But first, you can see the comments of the audience challenging Clint Flores until he eventually was forced to admit that he could definitely have bought a property with that salary even just for LM2,000: the equivalent of one year of his salary. Someone else told him that back then he had bought a property with the equivalent of three years of his salary.
Now, as for the figures, they are also well known and these can be found in many documents and studies. Any economist knows very well that under the Labour administration of Joseph Muscat from 2013 to 2019, property prices increased by a total of more than 100% with the average salary increasing by 25%. The discrepancy is much higher in reality because property prices increased much more.
