Malta will pay its final respects to Monsignor Victor Grech in a solemn funeral procession and religious ceremonies taking place on Friday, February 7, and Saturday, February 8, 2025. The farewell proceedings will begin at Mater Dei Hospital and conclude with a funeral Mass at St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, attended by national dignitaries.
Public Viewing and Condolence Book
On Friday, 7th February, the funeral cortege will depart from Mater Dei Hospital at 9:30 am, making its way to the San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, where it is scheduled to arrive at 9:55 am.
From 10:30 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the late Monsignor Grech will lie in state at the chapel of the San Blas Centre, allowing the public to pay their final respects. A condolence book will also be available for signing.
Funeral Procession and Mass
On Saturday, 8th February, the funeral procession will leave the San Blas Centre at 9:15 am, where residents will have the opportunity to bid their final farewell. It will then proceed to the Parish Church of Mary Immaculate, Mother of the Church in Tal-Ibraġġ, arriving at 9:40 am. Here, clergy and residents of Tal-Ibraġġ, where Monsignor Grech lived and served, will pay tribute.
Following this, the cortege will depart for St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, arriving at 10:20 am. Among those attending will be Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, the Prime Minister Robert Abela and the President Myriam Spiteri Debono.
A funeral Mass, led by Archbishop Scicluna, will commence at 10:30 am at St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Following the service, the funeral will continue in strict privacy.
Flags at Half-Mast
As a mark of national mourning, flags on public buildings will be flown at half-mast throughout Saturday, 8th February.
Monsignor Victor Grech dedicated his life to the Maltese community, particularly in the field of social work and rehabilitation. His passing marks a great loss for our country, and his legacy will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
