The Maltese contingent wrapped up its participation in the European Junior Snooker Championship, organized by the European Billiards and Snooker Association in Antalya, Turkey. The team, consisting of six young players aged between 12 and 20, completed their commitments on Saturday.
The final group-stage matches in the Under-21 category took place on the last day, with Maltese players competing in six matches. Despite a challenging competition, only one victory was recorded. As expected, no Maltese player progressed to the next stage in this category, but Matthias Debono secured an emphatic 3-0 win against Switzerland’s sole representative, Jenson Schmid. Debono, at 20 years old, competed exclusively in the Under-21 category due to his age. His frame scores were 55-46, 66-19, and 57-11.
With this result, all Maltese players managed to register at least one win in the group stage of this year’s Junior European Championship. Notably, 15-year-old Jake Castaldi delivered the best performance, reaching the last 16 in both the Under-16 and Under-18 categories.
Looking ahead, Malta’s senior contingent is set to arrive in Turkey on Sunday to compete in the European Snooker Championship. The seven Maltese players representing the country in this prestigious event are Aaron Busuttil, Brian Cini, Chris Peplow, Alex Borg, Arthur Cachia, Philip Ciantar, and Joseph Casha. Their campaign will officially begin on Monday.
