The newly appointed national team coach, Emilio De Leo, and team player Matthew Guillaumier addressed the media ahead of the national team’s first World Cup 2026 European qualifier against Finland. The match will be played later today at the National Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45.
Coach De Leo expressed his enthusiasm as he embarks on his new role, stating that he has found a welcoming group of players eager to learn and work hard. He explained that he had engaged with over 50 players through online meetings, emphasizing that building relationships is just as crucial as implementing tactical strategies.
“The players have demonstrated a strong willingness to learn and work, which is very encouraging for a coach. However, adapting to a new system is never easy,” De Leo remarked. He further outlined his short- and long-term objectives, which include improving the teamโs mentality, tactical awareness, and overall sporting goals. “Every game is different and must be approached accordingly. We want to win, despite any difficulties we may face.”
De Leo refrained from judging the past but acknowledged that he inherited a well-trained squad. He also highlighted the smooth integration of new players into the team, emphasizing the welcoming nature of the existing group. “The respect within the squad goes both ways, and all the new players have shown a positive attitude, sacrifice, and energy.”
Discussing the upcoming match against Finland, De Leo recognized their physicality and experience, as many of their players compete at high levels. However, he insisted that his team should face the challenge head-on. “We must show courage and not fear our opponents. The change in coaching staff has brought new enthusiasm, and we respect Finland, but our focus remains on our own team and performance.”
The coach also noted that the team has already shown improvement and stressed the importance of taking the journey step by step. “At the end, we will reflect on our progress and aim for even greater objectives. Hopefully, we can showcase the work we have put in during this short period.”
Matthew Guillaumier echoed the coachโs sentiments, speaking positively about the foreign-based players who have recently joined the team. He highlighted their contribution in giving the coach more tactical options, given the limited pool of local players. “Their experience makes a difference, and we also learn a lot from them. They have integrated well and shown good character.ย This can also be said for the younger ones.”
Guillaumier also pointed out that the main difference between foreign and local players lies in intensity, rather than technical or tactical ability. “We need to focus on upgrading our physicality to match top-level competition.”
While De Leo refrained from revealing specific tactical details, he emphasized the team’s intention to play an attacking game. “We donโt want to sit back and wait; we want to be proactive. There will be moments when we need to be aggressive, and my job is to guide the players and instill self-belief.”
As the national team prepares for the crucial fixture against Finland, there is a palpable sense of optimism and determination. The squad hopes to translate their hard work into a strong performance on the pitch, setting the stage for a positive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.
