The Battle for Villa Blye: Scottish Lodge to take Sovereign Grand Lodge to Court

Yesterday night, I’ve seen legal documents drawn up by Malta’s Freemason Scottish Lodge against the Grand Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta over Villa Blye in Paola. The Scottish Lodge is describing the Grand Lodge as “squatters” who are making illegal use of the building. The Grand Sovereign Lodge of Malta meets in a government building in Marsamxett, Valletta, that was leased to them by the government during the 1930s. This lease is about to end in the coming years.

The Grand Lodge is lead by Simon Cusens, who was peripherally involved in the Vitals fraud, and is also about to leave his post as head of the group by the end of the year. The Scottish lodge is lead by David Gatt, an ex-Police officer turned professional bank robber, and today a criminal lawyer. The feud between the two Masonic lodges over the building has been ongoing for several years.

Villa Blye is in Paola not Marsamxett. I lived in the apartments opposite in the 1970s.

The article doesn’t say that Villa Blye is in Marsamxett.

      1. It doesn’t, but I can see why Richard Caruana got confused and thought that it did. The article switches from the assertion that the Grand Lodge of Whatever (love that title) is making illegal use of Villa Blye (in Paola) to explaining that they meet in a building in Valletta, almost as if Villa Blye is the building in Valletta.

There should have been better grammatical separation between the two buildings. Moreover, the article never explains what the Lodge is using Villa Blye for, further adding to the confusion. Are they keeping it as a backup for when the lease of the Valletta building expires?

The Valletta hall is leased to UGLE not SGLOM. Some SGLOM lodges meet in Valletta, but the lease holders are UGLE. Villa Blye, on the other hand is jointly owned by SGLOM and Lodge St Andrew, the scottish lodge.

This property should be expropriated by the government and used for public purposes
