Swieqi United LEC07 pulled off a dramatic comeback to defeat reigning champions Lija Athletics 2-1 in the first final of the Enemed Women’s Futsal League. They have now put themselves just one win away from clinching their first-ever league title.
Lija Athletics had the better of the opening half and deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute through Hailey Russell, who finished off a well-constructed play to break the deadlock.
But the second half saw a transformed Swieqi United. Their intensity and attacking intent paid off when Amy Abdilla struck a stunning free-kick to level the match. Moments later, Swieqi were gifted the winning goal when a defensive mishap led to Jasmine Vella Turner accidentally turning the ball into her own net.
The match was fiercely contested, with both sides showing high levels of skill and determination, but it was Swieqi who held firm to see out the victory and gain the upper hand in the best-of-three final series.
The second final is scheduled for April 23 at the De La Salle Pavilion in Vittoriosa. A win for Swieqi will see them crowned champions for the 2024/25 season. Should Lija Athletics bounce back and force a deciding match, the third and final showdown will take place on April 30, at the same venue.
