The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has issued a statement against the recently implemented gender quotas in the Maltese Parliament. She said that despite its noble aims, it has become a tool that actively works against women candidates. She said that gender quotas have become a smokescreen, concealing the true reality of our society at the expense of women.
The European Parliament President added that Malta needs a serious discussion on why Malta doesn’t have a full-time parliament, and said that we need to fix the party-financing system so that political parties stop raising funds like charities.
She also stressed that Malta needs to move away from hyper-partisanship in order to have better discussions and move forward as a country.
The parliamentary gender quotas were introduced in Malta in 2021 and applied for the first time in 2022. Twelve women were elected in parliament with the gender quotes: eight from the Labour Party and four with the Nationalist Party.
