World Press Freedom Day 2025: Israel remains the biggest murderer of journalists in 2025 and Russia follows suit

At least two Ukrainian journalists were reported killed by Russia this year, while Israel continued its killing spree of journalists in Palestine killing at least 15 journalists in total this year. Israel marked 2024 as the deadliest year in journalism after killing more than 100 Palestinian journalists and media workers last year. Russia killed more than 100 journalists, mostly Ukrainian since the start of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Palestinian journalists and media workers that Israel killed this year are, Bashir Abu al-Shaar, Joel Maroun, Hassn Ashlih,ย Ahmed Abu Al-Rous, Ahmed Al Shayyah, Ahmed Mansour, Areej Shaheen, Fatma Hassona, Hassan Al-Qishawi, Hilmi al-Faqaawi, Hossam Shabat, Mahmoud Islim Al-Basos, Mohammed Al-Talmas, Omar Al Dirawi, and Saed Abu Nabhan.

The Ukrainian journalists killed by Russia this year are Tetiana Kulyk, and Victoria Roshchynaย whose body was sent back to Ukraine with missing body parts to cover signs of extensive torture.

European Union leaders and officials gave statements in support of the free press and pledged to ensure that journalists work i na free environment without fear of threat and violence.
