Malta strikes Gold at Mediterranean Bowling Championships in Turkey

The Malta National Bowling Team delivered a commanding performance to clinch the Gold medal in the Team event at the 2025 Mediterranean Bowling Championships held in Ankara, Turkey.

The quartet โ€” Mauro Anastasi, Cynthia Frendo Duca, Sue Abela, and Nicholas Muscat โ€” showcased exceptional skill and consistency to overcome some of the Mediterraneanโ€™s bowling powerhouses, including Italy, Spain, and hosts Turkey.

Malta laid down an early marker in the competition by finishing the first block of three games in the morning session at the top of the leaderboard, narrowly ahead of Cyprus, Italy, and Turkey. The afternoon session, however, brought a shift in momentum when Italy surged ahead with an impressive team game of 813, edging in front of both Malta and Cyprus by a slim margin.

Unfazed, the Maltese team responded emphatically. They fired back with a superb 857 in the next game to reclaim the lead, widening the gap over Cyprus and Turkey. The highlight of the day came in the final game, where Malta delivered a phenomenal score of 963 โ€” averaging an outstanding 240.75 per player โ€” to seal the victory in style. By the end of the block, Malta finished with a cumulative pinfall of 5,010, leaving Italy trailing nearly 200 pins behind with 4,811.

This dominant display not only secured Malta the prestigious Team Gold but also guaranteed that all four players would advance to the Masters event. Adding to the medal tally, Cynthia Frendo Duca captured a Bronze medal after placing third in the womenโ€™s All-Events category, an accolade awarded based on total pinfall across all disciplines.

With this achievement, Malta reaffirms its status as a rising force in Mediterranean bowling, combining individual brilliance and cohesive teamwork to top the podium against much larger nations.
