As Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and then Cardinal, Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, regularly used his Twitter account to express views, not by necessarily writing statements, but by sharing articles and ideas he agreed with it. His X.com (Twitter) account is very revealing of his politics and ideas leading to supporters of President Donald Trump describing him as “woke Marxist Pope”.
One of his latest shares was an article by Kat Armas a theologian who argued against the US Vice-President JD Vance’s comments that Christianity encourages you to first love your family before loving strangers.
In her article, Kat Armas, argued that JD Vance confused “responsibility” with “love” given that concept of “love” in Christianity is actually a universal principle which should be shared with everyone, including strangers and enemies. The theologian argued that the Gospel actually advocates the opposite of what Vance was claiming, emphasising that it encourages Christians to share their love beyond the confines of their own community.
Other recent shares by the ex-cardinal, Robert Prevost, include shares about the Synod of the Bishops, which last year marked a major milestone of Pope Francis’s legacy to the Church with its synodal document that appealed for a more inclusive and open Church. Ex-Cardinal Robert Prevost greatly supported Pope Francis’ vision to make the Church more more inclusive, as can be evidence with his sermons. Retweeting directly from Cardinal Mario Grech, who led the Pope’s vision in the synod, also aligns with the reports that Robert Prevost was close to Pope Francis and part of his inner circle.
Surely, Robert Prevost was no “Woke Marxist”, however. He also shared positions against euthanasia and abortion, ascertaining his orthodox Christian pro-life values.
As a Christian and a missionary to Peru, Robert Prevost adopted values of empathy and solidarity with the poor, the marginalised and the oppressed. He criticised President Donald Trump for his immigration policies and also shared an article about George Floyd.
Both President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance congratulated the new Pope and expressed their hope to meet him.
