Malta and Jordan become friendlier, but no tangible deals announced

Prime Minister Robert Abela was in Jordan on Monday this week to meet with King Abdullah II and sign a framework agreement and three memorandums of agreement on water and energy, tourism and language and archiving. The agreements have not been published yet and we are trying to get copies of them. These MOUs are also the result of an engagement with Jordan that started last year.

The Jordanian press covered the event extensively. The Prime Minister was received at Queen Alia International Airport by the Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship  Sami Samirat. Malta’s Prime Minister met with his Jordanian counterpart Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and visited the the Al-Zaatari Refugee Camp, to which Malta will be making a donation. The Office of King Abdullah Abdulllah II also released a statement on the visit and referred to the situation in Gaza and the West Bank where Israel is trying to displace the Palestinian population.

The Department of Information stated that a Permanent Joint Commission between Malta and Jordan will be established to oversee and foster the relationship. Press reports state that Malta and Jordan will be cooperating in the field of pharmaceuticals and to enhance tourism. Malta is exporting more than $3 million worth of exports to Jordan every year which include food items and printed material.
