Surprisingly it is easy to abandon dogs and euthanise them in Malta with no legal consequences

Anyone purchasing a pet animal should do so only after acquiring a permit and paying taxes and fees. Too many dogs have been abandoned in Malta since the Covid pandemic and shelters are full. Yet, people are still buying pets they can’t be responsible of.

Apparently, yesterday, animal rights activists raised the alarm after a couple wanted to euthanise their dog. Their excuse to kill the dog was because they had a newborn and supposedly, the dog “didn’t adjust”.

It should definitely not be so easy to euthanise a dog in Malta just as it shouldn’t be easy to purchase a pet. The current legal regime on pets is incentivising people to be reckless with their pets. The government should have made sure to focus on these issues instead of decriminalising the keeping and trading of wild and exotic animals.

The Maltese are wickedly amoral. To them, everything is a commodity which can be bought, sold or disposed of.
