On the eve of their high-profile European Qualifier (WC 2026) against the Netherlands, Malta national team head coach Emilio De Leo and returning defender Gabriel Mentz addressed the media.
Coach De Leo emphasized that the teamโs focus remains consistent, regardless of the opposition. โWe have trained hard and the group is motivated. Itโs a prestigious match, but our mentality doesn’t change based on the opponent,โ he said. โI donโt agree with the idea that this is our most difficult game. Every match must be treated equally. The so-called โeasierโ games on paper can often be the most difficult.โ
De Leo called for unity and support from fans back home: โMalta and its boys deserve respect. To achieve a good result, we need everyone behind us. That support is vital.โ
Respect was also extended to the Dutch side. โThe Netherlands are a very strong team with a lot of talent. We know what weโre facing โ it will be a real test. But weโre not just here to watch; weโre here to compete.โ
The coach also highlighted Maltaโs ongoing investment in youth, noting that the team is โgiving space to players born in 2007,โ signaling a long-term vision for the national side.
Squad changes are still being assessed ahead of kickoff. โWeโre still evaluating players, even tonight,โ De Leo confirmed. โBut weโre pleased to welcome back Shaw and Mentz, who return from suspension.โ
Gabriel Mentz, who missed recent fixtures due to suspension, expressed his pride in wearing the national shirt again. โItโs an honour to be part of the national team. It was frustrating to sit back and watch from afar,โ he said. โThis is one of the best teams in Europe, so itโs a big match. But weโve prepared well over the past three weeks and weโre ready.โ
Kick-off is set, the squad is motivated, and Malta is ready to face the challenge โ with focus, respect, and belief.
The Netherlands vs Malta will be played at the Euroborg Stadion in Groningen.ย Kick-off is at 20:45 and the match will be broadcast live on TVMSport+
