The Malta Financial Services Authority has hailed its increased supervisory activity while noting growth in the financial services sector. The authority stated that in 2024, it processed 287 applications and approved 257 for new financial entities within the Maltese sector. This brings the total number of supervised financial entities to 2,380—a significant increase from 2,073 in 2020.
30.3% of Malta’s financial entities are insurance intermediaries. 28.1% are funds, 12% are company service providers and 6.9% are investment services companies.
The MFSA also highlighted an an increase in its activity. In 2024 it conducted a total of 1345 supervisory interactions, 33% higher than 2023. The MFSA also took 134 enforcement actions, and issued up to €926,485 in penalties, alongside 49 public warnings and 5 consumer notices, as it underlined its “proactive approach to upholding market integrity”.
