Temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea have reached a high of 27.7°C across the coast of Spain and France on the 3 July, just a bit short of the 2023 August high of 28°C. The temperatures are 6.21°C higher above the 1982-2015 mean.
Rising sea temperatures pose a serious ecological threat, as they disrupt marine ecosystems by affecting a wide range of species and food chains, particularly through the degradation of seagrass meadows and the bleaching of coral reefs.
