Birkirkara made a confident start to their UEFA Conference League campaign, defeating Moldovan side Petrocub 1-0 in the first leg of the first qualifying round at home. A 54th-minute strike from debutant Geoffrey Acheampong proved decisive in what was a tightly contested affair.
The result marks an impressive opening to European competition for the Maltese club, especially against a side that featured in the group stages of the same tournament last season. With the return leg scheduled next week, Birkirkara take a narrow but valuable advantage to Moldova.
Head coach Stefano De Angelis fielded a bold lineup, integrating several new signings and opting for a fluid 3-4-3 that often looked more like a 3-5-2 in practice. Acheampong was given freedom to roam behind the front line and repaid the coachโs trust with the match-winning goal.
Miguel Martinez, formerly of Real Madridโs youth setup, started in goal behind a back three of Luis Cordova, Stefan Marjanovic, and Neil Micallef. Marcos Maydana operated on the left flank, with Acheampong, Lucas Macula, and Franklin Sasere leading the offensive line.
Off the field, the match also marked the return of former club stalwart Roderick Briffa, who was recently appointed sporting director after hanging up his boots.
Petrocub, lining up in a compact 3-5-2, entered the match with the benefit of match fitness from three recent domestic league games. They started strongly, creating several half-chances through Teodor Lungu and Victor Bogaciuc.
Birkirkara responded with high pressing and physicality, unsettling the Moldovan side and forcing errors. Acheampong had an early effort deflected wide after winning the ball high up the pitch, while Petrocub spurned a clear-cut chance when Popescu fired wide from a throw-in.
Match with chances at a premium
The best opportunity of the half fell to Popescu again just before the break, but Martinez made a decisive save in a one-on-one situation.
The game was ultimately decided early in the second half. Acheampong, alert to a loose ball, burst into the box and coolly finished to hand Birkirkara the lead in the 54th minute. The goal capped a strong debut performance from the former Sliema Wanderers forward.
With the lead secured, Birkirkara adopted a more controlled approach, focusing on managing the tempo and drawing fouls to frustrate Petrocubโs attempts to respond. Substitute Mihai Lupan came close to leveling with a low strike, and Lunguโs late free-kick also flew just wide.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Birkirkara held firm to seal a crucial first-leg victory. They now head to Moldova for next weekโs return leg with cautious optimism and a slender advantage.
