The Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Tim Cotton, and Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Rick Crawford, have urged the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to review ongoing intelligence sharing practices with Spain. The US politicians chairing the intelligence committees want to withhold any US national secrets from Spain to prevent them from being shared with China.
Spain has awarded Huawei a โฌ12.3 million contract via public tender to help its authorities in wiretapping and communications interceptions.ย The public contract also came after a Spanish lobby group employing Spanish politicians received funds from Huawei to lobby Madrid and Brussels against restrictions on Huawei in public procurement.
The Senator and the Congressman also stated that Spain’s collaboration with Huawei over wiretapping gives the Chinese government direct access to ongoing investigations of a NATO ally and can lead to a higher risk to Chinese dissidents in Spain.
The Spanish government has not made any statement on the matter so far.
