Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team made history once again by claiming the BOV Water Polo Championship for a record fifth consecutive year.
Heading into the final week of the BOV Centenary Championship, Sirens trailed rivals Sliema by four points. To retain their title, they needed back-to-back wins—and delivered in spectacular fashion.
In their decisive clash with Sliema, Sirens staged a remarkable comeback. Down 9-5 at the end of the third session, they mounted an extraordinary rally to win 10-9 at the final buzzer.
They then wrapped up the week with another thrilling performance, defeating San Giljan in a tightly contested match. San Giljan led early and maintained the advantage through most of the game. Sirens drew level at 7-7 in the third session and then surged ahead 9-7 with two goals from Kendra Navarro. San Giljan’s Profokieva pulled one back, but Margarita Plevritou closed the third at 10-8 in Sirens’ favour.
In the final session, goals from Plevritou and Martha Perici Ferrante widened the gap. San Giljan’s Elena Borg responded, but Navarro extended the lead to 13-9 with 3:23 remaining, sealing the result.
Sirens took full control of the remaining minutes to claim the championship—an especially symbolic achievement in the 100th Anniversary year of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA).
Sirens hope to claim historic water polo treble
Having already secured the BOV Winter League, Sirens are now poised to complete a domestic treble. They face San Giljan again in the BOV Women’s Knockout Final early next week.
The title celebrations included the presentation of a unique commemorative trophy, commissioned by Bank of Valletta for the ASA’s centenary. The award was presented by Charles Azzopardi, Head of CSR at BOV, ASA President Karl Izzo, and Women’s Water Polo coordinator Caroline Schiavone.
BOV’s long-standing partnership with the ASA continues to play a key role in supporting aquatic sports across Malta—highlighting its commitment to nurturing talent, fostering community spirit, and marking significant milestones in local sport.
