Shortly after an announcement was made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the recognition of the State of Palestine, Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela also announced that Malta will be recognising the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision was communicated to the ongoing UN Conference on Palestine in New York by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Christopher Cutajar.
Meanwhile, in Valletta, a protest organised by Moviment Graffitti took place in solidarity with Palestine with demonstrators urging the Maltese government to recognise the Palestinian state. Politicians who were present at the protest included ADPD-Green Party Leader Sandra Gauci, Momentum Leader Arnold Cassola, Labour MP Carmelo Abela, and PN MPs Mark Anthony Sammut, Albert Buttigieg, and Mario de Marco. Ex-President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca was also present.
The Palestinian Ambassador to Malta, Fadi Hanania was also present and addressed the protest. The ambassador condemned the international community for abandoning Palestine and said that 77 years of occupation should have been more than enough to address the plight of Palestinians who only want freedom. The ambassador urged the world to recognise the State of Palestine and added that although the world is late, it is better than never. He also thanked the demonstrators for their attendance.
