Nearly 500 speeding fines issued during overnight police traffic checks in June and July

In response to increased speeding during night-time hours – when roads are typically emptier and some drivers are more likely to take risks – the Malta Police Force has stepped up traffic enforcement operations during the late hours.

As part of intensified traffic checks carried out throughout June and July, between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., nearly 500 fines were issued to drivers caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 km/h.

Among the highest recorded speeds were 159 km/h, 156 km/h, and 148 km/h in zones with a 70 km/h speed limit. Other fines were issued to drivers clocked between 111 km/h and 140 km/h in the same 70 km/h zone.

In an 80 km/h zone, one driver was caught driving at 124 km/h. In a 60 km/h zone, drivers were recorded travelling between 103 km/h and 118 km/h. Perhaps most dangerously, several drivers were caught speeding between 121 km/h and 159 km/h in areas with a 50 km/h limit.

The Police Force reiterated its commitment to continuing round-the-clock traffic enforcement to safeguard the safety of all road users.
