Team Malta celebrated a remarkable achievement at the European Athletics Under 20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, as Matthew Galea Soler delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s 400m.
In Friday’s semifinal, Galea Soler clocked a stunning 46.84 seconds, securing his place in the final and ranking among the top eight U20 athletes in Europe in his event. The race also saw him alongside heat winner Conor Kelly of Ireland, who joined him in qualifying.
In Saturday’s final, the young Maltese sprinter once again proved his class, crossing the line in 46.91 seconds to claim a splendid fifth place among the continent’s best. His back-to-back sub-47-second performances showcased both consistency and composure on one of Europe’s biggest stages for emerging talent.
Galea Soler’s achievement marks a proud moment for Maltese athletics, highlighting the nation’s growing presence in high-level sprinting. His performance also sets an encouraging benchmark for future Maltese athletes aiming to make their mark internationally.
