Evolution Gaming’s scandal over its alleged sanctions-breaking has resurfaced after Court documents of their US case have been made public. The case involves a defamation suit by Evolution AB and its US units against Ralph J. Marra Jr. and the law firm Calcagni & Kanefsky.
In 2021, Ralp J. Marra and the C&K submitted a report on behalf of anonymous client to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement stating that Evolution Gaming was violating US sanctions. The report was written by private intelligence firm Black Cube. Subsequently, Evolution Gaming filed a defamation suit and also sought to reveal in Court the name of the anonymous client. The New Jersey Courts rejected Evolution AB’s request to name the anonymous client citing whistleblower status. The civil defamation suit is still ongoing.
However, excerpts from the Court documents published this week cite Kfir Kugler, an executive of Evolution Gaming, explicitly admitting that the company sold its products and services to markets and countries which were sanctioned by the US including Iran, Sudan and Syria. Other countries mentioned by Kugler where Evolution Gaming sold its products were China and Iraq.
Evolution Gaming is a Swedish publicly-listed company that sells casino and iGaming products to other businesses and has offices across Europe including in Malta.
In February 2024, Evolution Gaming claimed that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement on Evolution Gaming had closed an investigation on its practices and found no breaches on sanctions and prohibited markets.
