Today, Malta celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, known locally as Santa Marija, a national holiday that also commemorates the success of Operation Pedestal in August 1942. The convoy, that eft from Britain, including the battered tanker SS Ohio, delivered vital food, fuel, and ammunition to the besieged islands during World War II. Out of 14 merchant ships, only five reached Malta, and the operation cost over 550 lives. Its success was a turning point that kept Malta in the fight against Axis forces.
Only Alex Borg among the political leaders made reference to Operation Pedestal in their comments today.
