The labour market continued to expand in March 2025, with Malta’s labour supply (excluding part-timers) rising by 3.7% year-on-year to 295,814, according to the latest data published by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The increase was driven mainly by a surge in full-time registered employment and a reduction in unemployment levels.
Administrative data from Jobsplus show that full-time registered employment increased by 10,621 over March 2024, while the number of registered unemployed fell by 87. This reflects sustained labour market demand across both private and public sectors.
The largest contributions to the increase in full-time employment came from the wholesale and retail trade, including the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1,499), and from human health and social work activities (+1,351). Private sector employment accounted for the bulk of the growth, rising by 8,505 to reach 240,784. Public sector employment also expanded, increasing by 2,116 to 53,973.
Employment growth was broad-based across categories. The number of registered employees rose by 9,742, while full-time self-employed increased by 879. By gender, full-time employment for males rose by 3.3%, while female employment increased at a faster pace of 4.4% compared to March 2024.
Part-time employment also registered strong growth, increasing by 8.0% year-on-year. The accommodation and food service sector (+999) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+772) contributed the most to this rise.
The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job grew by 9.8% to 46,150, while those whose part-time work was their primary occupation increased by 5.8%, reaching 35,112.
