Unemployment rate holds at 2.6% in July; Youth joblessness edges higher

Malta’s unemployment rate for July 2025 stood at 2.6 %, unchanged from June but down by 0.4 percentage points compared to the same month last year, according to the latest labour market figures from the National Statistics Office.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 8,664, marking a 1.9 per cent decrease from June and an 11.5 per cent drop year-on-year. The majority of jobseekers were within the 25 to 74 age bracket, accounting for 80.2 %of total unemployment (6,952 persons). Meanwhile, unemployed youths aged 15 to 24 years amounted to 1,711, or nearly one in five of all jobseekers.

Gender comparisons showed no difference, with the unemployment rate for both males and females steady at 2.6 %, unchanged from the previous month.

Youth unemployment, however, recorded a slight increase. The jobless rate for those aged 15 to 24 years rose to 6.3 %, up 0.1 percentage points from June. In contrast, the unemployment rate among adults aged 25 to 74 years dipped to 2.2 %, a marginal 0.1 percentage point decrease.
