Saints Complete Historic League and Knockout Double
San Ġiljan confirmed their status as Malta’s dominant force in water polo, clinching the BOV Water Polo Premier League 2025 title with a 2-0 playoff series sweep over arch-rivals Neptunes. The triumph also sealed a memorable league and knockout double, coming just weeks after their emphatic 16-10 victory in the BOV Knockout final.
Guided by new coach Giorgos Katsaounis, the Saints showcased resilience and flair throughout the season. They edged the first playoff encounter in a penalty shootout following a 13-13 draw, with goalkeeper Jake Tanti producing two decisive saves to secure victory.
The second match proved just as dramatic. San Ġiljan struck early, surging 4-0 ahead through Darren Zammit (2), Aaron Younger, and Ben Plumpton. Neptunes rallied to level at 5-5, and the contest remained fiercely balanced all the way to 12-12 after regulation time.
In the penalty shootout, both teams converted flawlessly until the decisive moment: Julian Valletta missed for Neptunes, paving the way for Matthew Zammit to score and put San Ġiljan ahead. Tanti then denied Alec Fenech with another spectacular save, sealing a 16-15 win and sparking wild celebrations.
This double success marks a resounding comeback for the Saints after a trophyless campaign last year, underlining their pedigree in Maltese water polo.
Following the match, the custom-designed BOV Premier League trophy, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, was presented to the jubilant San Ġiljan squad by Bank of Valletta COO Ernest Agius and ASA President Karl Izzo, in the presence of Minister for Sport Dr Clifton Grima.
As Maltese aquatic sports celebrate this centenary milestone, San Ġiljan’s double triumph adds a golden chapter to the sport’s history.
