Russia strikes civilian demining operation in Ukraine: kills two humanitarian workers

Yesterday, in a precision strike using an Iksander ballistic missile, Russia killed two humanitarian workers working with the Danish Refugee Council who were conducted a demining operation in the region of Chernihiv. Chernihiv was originally occupied by the Russians in the invasion of 2022 but withdrew from it before heavily mining the previously occupied areas.

Russia also filmed the attack, clearly showing it was targeting a civilian operation. The Russian Ministry of Defence said that it struck a Ukrainian combatant group. The humanitarian aid workers are reportedly Ukrainian. Up to 8 others have been injured.

This is not the first time that Russia specifically targeted humanitarian workers in Ukraine. On August 14th last year, Russia killed two volunteers from a local charity with a drone strike as they were handing out free water in the city of Kherson. Also in Kherson on February 2nd, Russia killed two French humanitarian-aid workers in a drone strike.ย On September 12th 2024, Russia struck a humanitarian aid distribution point in Donetsk killing three Red Cross staff.

Yesterday in Paris, the Coalition of the Willing hashed out details on the European security guarantees for Ukraine. At the end of the meeting, President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s position that it won’t cede land to Russia. President Zelensky also stated that Russia is clearly not showing any interest to hold a trilateral meeting between the US, Russia and Ukraine as Russia is insisting with President Zelensky to visit Moscow instead.
