The Government clears Daphne’s makeshift monument to celebrate Victory Day

Celebrations took place over the weekend at the Great Siege Monument in front of the Law Courts to commemorate Malta’s Victory Day. Today, the President held a state ceremony with a wreath-laying.

The makeshift monument for Daphne Caruana Galizia was cleared for the ceremonies. I believe both can coexist, but the Labour government has consistently failed to acknowledge her work and legacy as one of Malta’s most significant authors and journalists, persistently attempting to erase her history and the past events associated with the Party. Such recognition would also be inconsistent with Labour’s current ties to Joseph Muscat’s criminal network.

The ceremony in such conditions is a stark reminder of the remaining divisions and wounds in society.

Victory Day commemorates the end of the Great Siege in 1565 and the siege of the Send World War with Italy’s surrender in 1943.

The Great Siege Monument was sculpted by Antonio Sciortino and has been on display since 1927.
