Ethiopia inaugurated the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam yesterday in an official government ceremony in Guba. Not many foreign dignitaries were present for the ceremony but the President of Kenya and the President of Dijibouti were both present. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led the ceremony.
The dam is not fully complete but has been operational since 2022. 4 turbines are operational, two at 375 MW and two at 400 MW, but it is expected work with up to 13 turbines. Once completed the dam is expected to generate an annual total output of more than 15,760 gigawatt-hours (GWh), equivalent to 15.76 terawatt-hours (TWh), more than enough for Ethiopia’s needs. Currently, with four turbines operational, it generates 1,550 MW, contributing about 2,700 GWh over 10 months in 2023 surpassing initial targets by 26%.
The dam is expected to be operational with up to 13 turbines.
The dam has been contested by Egypt, which fears losing water from the River Nile, on which many Egyptian communities and cities depend. The Egyptian government said that it will be watching developments related to dam very closely.
