Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg meets his Libyan counterpart to discuss migration and maritime borders

Yesterday in the afternoon, Libya’s Minister for Forreign Affairs Taher Salem Al Baour from the Government of National Unity (Tripoli) came to Malta to meet his counterpart, Minister Ian Borg. According to Libya’s private media outlet and TV Channel Al-Ahrar, the pair discussed maritime borders.

A press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the pair discussed immigration, the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. On migration, the pair discussed the EU’s and Malta’s help to Libya to support efforts in stopping illegal immigration. They also discussed the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya.

Libya stops illegal immigrants from crossing the Mediterranean Sea in exchange of European assistance but Libya’s migration control and detention is fraught with serious human rights abuses.

Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs also briefed his Libyan counterpart on Malta’s intentions to recognise the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly on the end September. You can read the statement here.
