Labour drums up social-democrat credentials at Kennedy Grove

During the Labour Party’s political rally, last Saturday at Kennedy Grove, Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted that the Labour Party is upholding social-democracy and promised the best budget ever for 2026. The Prime Minister stated that the Labour government has reduced the number of people applying for social benefits as employment increased and said that Labour’s aim is to keep helping families. The Prime Minister also highlighted the increases in children’s allowances.

The rally started with a speech by Alex Agius Saliba riling up the crowd with a partisan speech, with typical gaslighting about Labour corruption and Opposition MEPs. Alex Agius Saliba brought up the argument about Opposition MEPs harming investment against Malta with their speeches at the European Parliament – I would say that this is potentially libel speech.

Overall the speeches tied with the upcoming budget. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg condemned Charlie Kirk’s murder and praised his advocacy for freedom of speech. The Deputy Premier also said that the Labour Party should be open to contrasting ideas and advocate for tolerance even for those who are against it. Borg also said that Kennedy Grove was named for President John F. Kennedy who was murdered in 1963 highlighting his condemnation for political violence.

All of them reminded their crowd about the time when the government was run by the Nationalist Party, claiming that back then cost of living was much more difficult. This is partly true insofar it is applied to most homeowners with the young incoming generations facing a housing crisis.

The Labour Party is drumming up its social-democrat credentials but is ignoring other major issues such as corruption in our political system and planning and construction. The speech by the Deputy Prime Minister is very positive but it does not necessarily reflect the Labour Party’s policy and Borg, as a diplomat, is also speaking with his US diplomatic audience in mind. Alex Agius Saliba is a better reflection of the actual current state of the Labour Party.
