Floriana bounce back with statement win over Marsaxlokk, Gzira hold Ħamrun

Floriana responded in perfect fashion to their recent derby defeat to Valletta, producing a 2-1 victory over former league leaders Marsaxlokk at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

The Greens delivered a commanding performance, controlling much of the game and showing resilience and determination to return to winning ways after a tough loss to their rivals.

Fast Start by Floriana

Floriana nearly struck early when Jake Grech forced Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi—facing his former club—into a sharp save after just eight minutes.

Moments later, it was Marsaxlokk’s turn to threaten. Another former Floriana player, Ulises Arias, came close to opening the scoring, only to be denied by a fine stop from Guilherme Cioletti.

The Greens remained on the front foot and twice came close to breaking the deadlock:

  • Iago Mendonça’s powerful header was blocked by Mafoumbi.

  • Federico Varela’s header flashed narrowly wide of the target.

Jah Puts Floriana Ahead

Floriana’s persistence finally paid off in the 40th minute.
Mohammed Jah embarked on a surging solo run before drilling a low strike past Mafoumbi to give his side a deserved lead heading into the break.

Second-Half Drama

Just ten minutes after the restart, Floriana had a golden chance to extend their lead. João Teixeira broke through on goal but blazed his shot over the bar from a tight angle.

The second goal arrived on 65 minutes when Floriana were awarded a free kick.
Jake Grech’s inswinging delivery deceived everyone and flew directly into the net, doubling the Greens’ advantage.

Marsaxlokk managed to pull one back in stoppage time when Owen Spiteri, attempting to clear the danger, accidentally deflected the ball into his own goal.

However, the late strike proved nothing more than a consolation as Floriana held firm to secure three vital points.

Impact on Standings

This crucial win sees Floriana regain momentum in the YoHealth Malta Premier League, cutting Marsaxlokk’s early dominance and keeping the title race wide open.

The Greens now sit just one point behind leaders Hibernians, who moved top after their win over Naxxar Lions.

Gzira hold Hamrun

Ħamrun Spartans missed the opportunity to take sole leadership of the YoHealth Malta Premier League after being held to a 0-0 draw by a disciplined Gżira United at the National Stadium.

The Spartans dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to break down Gżira’s solid defensive setup, with their forwards failing to convert key chances. Gżira, meanwhile, executed their game plan well, frustrating the defending champions and hitting on the counter through Maxuell Maia and Andre.

Ħamrun’s best opportunity came in the 63rd minute when N’Dri Koffi missed from close range after a well-worked move involving Rafael Compri and substitute Eder. Earlier, Koffi and Ante Coric had also been denied by goalkeeper Colombo, who was in top form for Gżira.

Despite late pressure, Ħamrun lacked creativity in the final third, and Gżira held firm to secure a valuable point — their third of the season — while denying the Spartans top spot in the standings.
