Floriana continued their strong run of form with a well-earned win over Żabbar St Patrick in challenging, rain-soaked conditions at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
The three points were crucial for the Greens, who now sit second in the standings, just a single point behind league leaders Hibernians.
Early Breakthrough for Floriana
The heavy downpour made free-flowing football nearly impossible, forcing both sides to rely on set pieces and quick transitions. Floriana broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Federico Varela’s pinpoint free-kick was met by Iago Mendonca, who headed the ball into the far corner.
Żabbar tried to respond but struggled to create clear chances. Their first real threat came in stoppage time of the first half when Samuel Da Mata Gomes’ header from a throw-in was pushed away by Floriana goalkeeper Cioletti.
Żabbar Fight Back, Floriana Respond Immediately
Żabbar introduced striker Mario Fontanella after the break, and he nearly equalized immediately but dragged his shot wide. Moments later, they came agonizingly close when Santiago Cejas struck the crossbar after connecting with a fine cross from Vinicius.
Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute as Vinicius burst down the left flank and stunned Cioletti with a powerful shot to level the score at 1-1.
However, Floriana hit back almost instantly. From the restart, Mustapha Jah was set up by Varela, turned past Mayron, and fired home to restore Floriana’s lead.
Żabbar’s defense was left reeling, and just three minutes later, Floriana extended their advantage. In another swift attacking move, Jah turned provider, setting up Jake Grech, who slotted past Luca Camilleri to make it 3-1.
Valletta Fight Back Against Mosta
Elsewhere, Valletta produced a spirited comeback to defeat Mosta 4-1, moving level on points with third-placed Ħamrun Spartans.
Mosta took the lead midway through the first half through Prince, but Valletta showed great resilience after the break.
