It was a dramatic weekend in the YoHealth Malta Premier League, as Valletta fought back to edge past Tarxien Rainbows, while Naxxar Lions produced the shock of the season so far with a resounding 4-0 win over Sliema Wanderers.
Valletta 2-1 Tarxien Rainbows
Valletta came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tarxien Rainbows, a result that lifts them level on points with ฤฆamrun Spartans and just one behind leaders Floriana.
The Citizens were inspired by Yuri Messias, who scored both goals to complete the comeback.
The first half lacked clear chances, though Valletta threatened in the 26th minute when Jackson Mendoza split the Tarxien defence with a perfectly weighted through ball to Jefferson, but the Brazilianโs effort only found the side-netting.
Tarxien struck first in stoppage time, with Rafael Tavares rising unmarked from a corner to head past Guarnone, giving the Rainbows a surprise lead.
However, Valletta responded almost immediately. Straight from the restart, a poor clearance from Marcus Grima fell to Messias, who made no mistake with a powerful strike to level the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
After the interval, Valletta pushed for a winner but initially struggled to break down a determined Tarxien defence. Messias came close on 80 minutes, his thundering effort narrowly missing the target.
Just two minutes later, substitute Andrea Zammit surged into space and unleashed a low drive, which Tarxien goalkeeper Andreas Vella could only parry into the path of Messias. The Brazilian calmly slotted home to seal all three points for Valletta.
This victory keeps Valletta firmly in the title race, just one point adrift of Floriana.
Naxxar Lions 4-0 Sliema Wanderers
At the Centenary Stadium, Naxxar Lions delivered a stunning performance to claim their first win of the season, thrashing title hopefuls Sliema Wanderers 4-0.
Brazilian forward Joao Victor was the star of the show, netting twice, while Giuseppe Bonanno and Joao Moura added the others in what was a morale-boosting result for the Lions as they battle to avoid the relegation spots.
Sliema started brightly, forcing Matthias Debono into an early save after Fernandinhoโs powerful strike. But Naxxar capitalised on a mistake in the 18th minute when Wanderers goalkeeper Rashed Al Tumi fumbled a routine cross, allowing Moura to tap into an empty net.
Sliema pushed forward in search of an equaliser, leaving gaps at the back. Naxxar punished them on 42 minutes when Bonanno latched onto a quick counterattack and fired in a precise angled shot to double the lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the Wanderers just before halftime, as Joao Victor broke clear and clinically finished past Al Tumi to make it 3-0.
The second half saw Sliema commit even more players forward, but it was Naxxar who almost added a fourth when Batista missed a one-on-one chance.
On 82 minutes, the Lions struck again on the break. Joao Victor chipped the onrushing Al Tumi to complete his brace and seal a memorable 4-0 triumph.
Sliemaโs misery was compounded in stoppage time when Al Tumi was sent off for a reckless challenge outside the box.
Implications for the table
The result sees Naxxar climb off the bottom of the standings, providing a crucial confidence boost in their fight for survival.
For Sliema, the heavy defeat is a serious blow to their top-six aspirations. They now sit fifth with 11 points, only one point ahead of Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk, with only two of the three teams set to secure a place in the Top Six at the end of the Opening Round.
Valletta, meanwhile, continue to gain momentum, moving to second place, level on points with ฤฆamrun Spartans and breathing down the necks of league leaders Floriana.
This weekendโs results underline the unpredictability of the YoHealth Malta Premier League, with both the title race and the battle for survival heating up as the season progresses.
