The first round of the Assikura Women’s League concluded on Sunday with three contrasting results. Mġarr United held their nerve to claim a narrow win over Hibernians and maintain their 100% start, while Swieqi United and Birkirkara both recorded emphatic victories to keep the title race tight.
Hibernians 0–1 Mġarr United
Scorer: A. Grech 4’
Referee: Hüseyin Baykuş
A fourth-minute strike from Amber Grech proved decisive as Mġarr United edged past Hibernians to secure their fifth win in as many matches.
Ryan Vella’s side struck early and then showed their defensive organisation to resist Hibernians’ attempts at a comeback. The Paolites applied pressure but struggled to break down a disciplined Mġarr back line, as the Greens calmly saw out their slender advantage.
The result means Mġarr finish the opening round with a perfect 15 points, three ahead of champions Swieqi. Hibernians, who slip to third on nine points, will look to respond as the second round kicks off.
Swieqi United 6–1 Valletta
Scorers: A. Yaneva 18’, T. Falzon 28’, S. Abdulai 70’, 83’, 86’, S. Saliba 80’ (SU); S. Bugeja 66’ (V)
Referee: Jo-Anna Vassallo
Swieqi United kept pace with the leaders by sweeping aside Valletta in a dominant 6–1 display.
Salamatu Abdulai was the standout performer, netting a second-half hat-trick that underlined her finishing quality. Aleksandra Yaneva and Tammy Falzon had already put the Owls firmly in control before Sara Saliba added a late sixth.
Valletta managed a consolation through Shakira Bugeja, but the newcomers struggled to cope with Swieqi’s relentless attacking play.
San Ġwann 2–7 Birkirkara
Scorers: M. Fanega 25’, 48’ (SG); P. Lamanna 6’, 78’, H. Sekura 11’, I. Camilleri 19’, 84’, M. Pellegrini 37’, M. Cardona 64’ (B)
Referee: Jake Farrugia
Birkirkara showed their firepower with a comprehensive 7–2 victory over San Ġwann.
Patricia Lamanna and Izabella Camilleri led the charge with two goals apiece, while Haruhi Sekura, Maya Pellegrini, and Mariah Cardona were also on target for the Stripes.
San Ġwann battled hard and found the net twice through Morena Fanega, but ultimately had no answer to Birkirkara’s pace and precision in the final third.
Looking ahead
With the first round complete, Mġarr United lead on maximum points, closely followed by Swieqi and Birkirkara, both of whom look well placed to challenge across the season. The upcoming second round promises a fierce battle at the top, with the much-anticipated Mġarr–Swieqi showdown next on the calendar.
