37-year-old man arrested after €1.5 million cocaine seizure arriving from Sicily

A 37-year-old man has been arrested after police discovered 25 kilograms of suspected cocaine that were allegedly being smuggled into Malta from Sicily. The drugs are estimated to have a street value of around €1.5 million.

The man was stopped during routine vehicle checks on Thursday evening as cars disembarked from the catamaran arriving from Sicily. He was driving an Opel and reportedly began acting suspiciously.

Police transported the vehicle to their garage for further inspection, where they discovered 25 packets of cocaine – each weighing one kilogram – hidden inside false wooden compartments built into the sides of the car.

Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia was informed of the find and appointed an inquiry.

The suspect is currently being held at the Floriana Police lock-up and is expected to be arraigned in court today at around 11:30am before Magistrate Gabriella Vella.

Police investigations are ongoing.
