The Energy and Environment Minister’s latest gimmick comes in the form of solar-flowers – and the idea is supposed to make the use of land in Malta efficient. These solar-flowers are part of a government park-and-ride project in Ta’ Xħajma, Xewkija (Gozo).
The government describes this new bus service station as “multi-modal hub”.
The problem with the gimmick of the solar-flowers is that the Energy Ministry is promoting the use of agricultural land for solar panels, and selling the idea as part of Malta’s “green transition.” Malta has given up on developing its agricultural sector, so the government is taking the easy way out by using the remaining unused agricultural land for solar panels.
Around 10% of Malta’s energy supply comes from solar energy with up to 20,000 homes in Malta having PV panels installed. Malta has one of the lowest electricity rates in the EU, but it comes with significant public cost via government subsidies.
