Up to 200,000 people attend one of the biggest demonstrations in Hungary’s history

Up to 200,00 people attended the Opposition’s rally in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday the 23rd October in commemoration of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

The current Opposition Leader in Hungary and leader of the Respect and Freedom Party (TISZA), Péter Magyar, led the rally and and gave a speech prompting the crowd to chant “Russians, go home!” after he said in Russian, “Comrades, it’s the end”.

Viktor Orban’s prospects of holding power look increasingly dim as Hungary heads to the general elections  in April 2026. Most surveys currently show Péter Magyar is ahead of Viktor Orban by a significant margin. At the rally of the 23rd October organised by the ruling-party, Fidesz, had less than half of participants compared to their rivals, with a total attendees of up to 90,000 people.

Hungary’s 1956  Revolution ended with Soviet tanks tolling into Budapest and massacring thousands of demonstrators after Hungarians revolted against their Soviet-puppet government. Local dissidents and political leaders were also purged following the Soviet occupation.

Viktor Orban was a pro-Western, pro-EU advocate in Hungary and a strong critic of Russia, until he changed his mind after meeting Vladimir Putin in Moscow in 2009.
