Budget 2026: Highlight investments in Infrastructure, Safety, Culture, and Services

In today’s budget proposals for 2026, the Finance Minister announced that the government is set to continue to invest in infrastructure, education, and quality of life, with a special focus on Gozo. These were some highlights.

  • Infrastructure and Transport
    • New and upgraded roads in Gozo, including arterial routes and pedestrian networks, to reduce congestion.

    • Park & Ride system expansion and studies to optimize traffic flow in Rabat.

    • Gozo Rural Airfield project set to boost specialised tourism and local employment.

  • Education and Youth Support

    • Modern schools built or renovated across Gozo.

    • Increased allowances for post-secondary students, benefiting over 800 students.

    • Programs like Blossom and the Vajringa Centre for Music and the Arts promote wellbeing and inclusion for children and youth with disabilities.

  • Sports and Recreation

    • Multi-sport facilities, football infrastructure, and an upcoming athletic track in Gozo.

    • Development of urban parks, including Victoria Park in Rabat, offering family-friendly recreational spaces.

  • Healthcare

    • Expansion of Gozo HealthCare Campus with new outpatient services, helipad, renal and coronary units, and modernization of facilities.

  • Culture and Heritage

    • Museums, historical buildings, and agritourism projects being developed.

    • Restoration of churches, fortifications, and public gardens to preserve Maltaโ€™s cultural heritage.

    • Creative initiatives like the Culture and Arts Hub, Creative Art Spaces, and the Malta Film Studios aim to support the arts and local film industry.

  • Safety and Security

    • Upgrades in police, civil protection, and armed forces with new technology, equipment, and training.

    • Modernization of correctional facilities with improved security and rehabilitation programs.

  • Justice and Equality

    • Digitalization of courts, support for domestic violence victims, LGBTIQ+ rights protection, IVF access, and child digital safety reforms.

  • Foreign Relations and European Funds

    • Malta continues to participate actively in international peace and humanitarian initiatives.

    • European funds are being utilized to support economic recovery, resilience projects, and long-term development.

  • Public Services and Governance

    • Expansion of Service.gov centers, AI and digital infrastructure upgrades, local government capacity building, and labor rights education.

    • Consumer protection strengthened through digital complaint systems and mediation.

  • Animal Welfare

    • Preparations are underway for a new Animal Hospital.

    • Interim veterinary services will be provided overnight, on Sundays, and public holidays.
