Hannibal Gaddafi has been released from prison in Lebanon after posting bail of up to $900,000. His bail initially at $11 million but was reduced on appeal saying he did not have the money. His travel ban has been lifted.
Hannibal Gaddafi was imprisoned in Lebanon in 3025 after being kidnapped in Syria by armed militants of the Lebanese armed group, the Amal Movement. Bashar al-Assad handed him over to the Lebanese authorities and subsequently, Lebanon charged him for failing to provide information on the disappearance of Lebanese citizen and Shia cleric Musa al-แนขadr. Musa al-Sadr disappeared after visiting Muammar Gaddafi in Tripoli, Libya in 1978.
Hannibal Gaddafi was just a child when the disappearance ofย Musa Al-Sadr took place and his arrest is widely considered as a form of retribution. He was born in 1976.
He fled Libya in 2011 after rebels defeated his father’s regime in a revolution that swept the country during the Arab Spring. Hannibal Gaddafi did not play a prominent role in his father’s regime but syphoned tens of millions of US Dollars to his offshore accounts in Paris, Turkey and Panama as an “economic advisor” to Libya’s national shipping company, General National Maritime Transport Company.
He was previously being sought by the Libyan authorities but it after being released by the Lebanese Court with no travel restrictions, Hannibal Gaddafi seems to be a free man. The Libyan authorities did not issue a release saying that he is being sough for justice.
