The EU publishes “accelerated” plan for High-Speed Rail-Network: to be completed in 2040

Yesterday, the EU Commission released its so-called “accelerated” plan for the implementation of a high-speed railway network in Europe but the plan is estimated to be completed in 2040. The plan envisages various routes and connections to be built via coordination between member states. The plan will be developed from the existing trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

The plan envisages that people will be able to travel from Berlin to Copenhagen in four hours instead of seven by 2030. By 2035, a route between Sofia and Athens will be completed with a travelling time of six hours. New links will be built to the Baltic countries and a new link from Paris to Lisbon via Madrid will also be built. The plan has to be ready by 2027 aimed at solving traffic bottlenecks and the Commission will now start drawing up plans how to finance the project.

In 2026 the EU Commission also plans to issue reforms to simplify the the cross-border ticketing system.

The fastest trains Europe are so far used for the Spanish Alta Velocidad Espaรฑolaย (AVE) service managed by the State-run railway service, Renfe. They can reach speeds of up to 350Km/Hr (pictured above). The trains connected Madrid and Barcelona in a journey of less than three hours.

Malta is currently also discussing its mass public transportation project.

What about Rome to Catania, so that even Malta can be connected to this high speed rail ?
