Brave Malta U19 Fall Narrowly to Northern Ireland in Opening Qualifier

The Malta Under-19 national team opened their UEFA U19 Championship qualification campaign with a narrow 1–0 defeat to Northern Ireland at the Centenary Stadium on Wednesday morning.

Despite the result, Malta produced a spirited display, particularly in the second half, as coach Vasco Regini’s side pushed their opponents all the way in search of an equaliser. The performance was a strong response following difficult results in October’s preparatory fixtures against Belarus.

Competitive First Half

Malta started confidently, matching Northern Ireland for long spells and enjoying good spells of possession. Goalkeeper James Sissons of Chesterfield was called into action early, saving from Braiden Graham after four minutes. The visitors continued to threaten, with Ceadach O’Neill and Keevan Hawthorne creating chances, while Sissons produced another fine stop to deny Paul McGovern on the half hour.

Malta’s best early chance came from Thomas Melillo, whose low strike went inches wide, while Dejan Farrugia later forced Northern Ireland goalkeeper Joshua Gracey into a save.

The breakthrough arrived in the 25th minute, when James Simpson headed home from close range following a pinpoint cross by captain Blaine McClure, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead they would hold onto until full-time.

Malta Rally After the Break

The Maltese team came out strong in the second half, showing greater urgency and attacking intent. Substitute Andreas Vella went close on 76 minutes, breaking down the left before finding only the side-netting. Moments later, Melillo had Malta’s best chance of the match, breaking free on the right side of the box but firing over with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Jayden Vella also tested Gracey with a powerful effort late on, while Malta pressed relentlessly in stoppage time, creating several tense moments in the Northern Irish area — but the equaliser ultimately proved elusive.

Elsewhere in Group 13

In the group’s other fixture, the Czech Republic defeated ten-man Azerbaijan 6–1 later in the day. The top two teams from each group will progress directly to the Elite Round in spring 2026, while the third-placed side could still advance depending on their ranking among the third-placed teams across all 13 groups.
