Yesterday, commemorating the World Day of the Poor, Pope Leone XIV urged world leaders to listen to the cry of the poorest. He presented once again the Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi te, “On the love for the poor” which was written by his predecessor, Pope Francis, but completed posthumously by Pope Leone XIV.
The Apostolic Exhortation renews the Catholic Church’s teachings on the poor and the economy, renewing the Church’s tradition with other guiding documents such as the Rerum Novarum. It describes the poor as the heart of the Church and underlines that that Church has always and fundamentally been the Church of the marginalised and the poorest. The Apostolic Exhortation calls for aid to the poor as a necessity and not a blessing and even states that spirituality should not come at the expense, nether prioritised over, material help. It also condemns the assumption that a free market economy will automatically help the poor and states that poverty must be addressed in an active manner.
The Pope also reiterated his concerns for Ukrainian civilians and reminded them that he is close to them as they face consistent and daily airstrikes by Russia.
The Pope held his regular blessings and Angelus prayer, yesterday, at Saint Peter’s Square.
