Floriana defeat Marsaxlokk to reclaim Top Spot in Premier Top Six

Floriana reclaimed first place in the YoHealth Malta Premier Top Six after a disciplined 2โ€“1 victory over Marsaxlokk at the National Stadium. It was another composed and organised display from the Greens, who once again demonstrated their ability to control matches with efficiency and structure.

Midfielders Dunstan Vella and Jake Grech were central to Florianaโ€™s triumph. Vella opened the scoring with a well-taken finish, while Grechโ€”who dictated play throughoutโ€”provided the decisive assist for Charles Mโ€™Mombwaโ€™s winning goal.

The victory lifts Floriana one point clear of ฤฆamrun Spartans, strengthening their bid to finish the Top Six phase as league leaders.

Floriana started brightly and nearly struck early when Vella unleashed a powerful effort after seven minutes, only for Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Pablo Sรกnchez to push it aside. Their pressure paid off in the 17th minute: Federico Varela broke free down the left and squared the ball to an unmarked Vella, who prodded past Sรกnchez to make it 1โ€“0.

Marsaxlokk responded well and equalised ten minutes later. From a Leandro Aguirre corner, Floriana defender Iago Mendonรงa misjudged his clearance and headed the ball into his own net, bringing the match level.

With momentum shifting, Marsaxlokk began to enjoy greater possession. But just as they looked capable of overturning the scoreline, Floriana struck again. A swift transition led by Grech set Mโ€™Mombwa through on goal, and the forward kept his composure to slot past the advancing Sรกnchez, restoring the Greensโ€™ advantage.

Marsaxlokk pushed for a response, going close through an inswinger from Ulises Arias just before half-time, but Floriana held their lead.

Floriana control the second half

Early in the second half, Marsaxlokk appealed for a penalty when Fred Tsoumou went down under a challenge from Mendonรงa. However, after a VAR review, referee Ishmael Barbara confirmed there was no foul.

Clear chances were limited thereafter, though Floriana twice came close to extending their lead. Owen Spiteri forced Sรกnchez into a sharp stop with a powerful strike, and later Aleandro Garziaโ€™s volley was turned over by the Marsaxlokk goalkeeper.

Floriana saw out the final minutes with discipline to secure a valuable win that sends them back to the summit of the Premier standings.
