Rector of College of Europe and ex-EU Commissioner arrested by Belgian Police

The incumbent Rector of the College of Europe and the previous EU Commission Vice-President and EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini, has been arrested by the Belgian Police over a suspected corrupt scheme with reagrd to the training of European diplomats. The case revolves are the abuse of a programme awarded by the European External Action Service (EEAS) to the European Union Diplomatic Academy to train junior dipomats. Three others were arrested.

Belgian Police raided Mogherini’s office at the College of Europe and the offices of the EEAS early this morning. The police interrogated at least 10 individiuals. Stefano Sannino, Mogherini’s deputy-head at the College of Europe was also arrested. He was previously the EEAS Secretary-General.

The investigation was prompted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. In a statement, the EPPO said that it suspects that the College of Europe leaked details of a tender to individuals who are close to the College’s head in order to give them an advantage in the procurement process. OLAF, the EU’s anti-fraud office is also supporting the investigation.
